Background: The use of electric scooters (e-scooters) continues to increase as a simple, inexpensive means of transport, resulting in a sharp increase in the incidence of scooter-related accidents. No study to date has closely examined the injury extent to the lower leg, joints, and extremities from e-scooter-related accidents. Here, we investigated the epidemiology and injury patterns of such accidents, focusing on injuries to the ankle and foot. Methods: Based on data from a single tertiary hospital's database, the demographics of 563 patients with scooter-associated injuries were analyzed retrospectively. Among the patients, 229 patients who were injured by e-scooter riding were further investigated. Based on the data, the general demographics of whole scooter-associated injuries and the injury characteristics and fracture cases of the lower leg, ankle, and foot were analyzed. Results: During the 4-year study period, the number of patients injured by e-scooters increased every year. Lower extremities were the most common injury site (67.2%) among riders, whereas injuries to the head and neck (64.3%) were more common in riders of non-electric scooters. Among the lower leg, ankle, and foot injuries of riders (52 cases), the ankle joint (53.8%) was the most commonly injured site, followed by the foot (40.4%) and lower leg (21.2%). The fracture group scored significantly higher on the Abbreviated Injury Scale than the non-fracture group (p < 0.001). Among the fracture group (20 cases), ankle fractures (9 cases) were most common, including pronation external rotation type 4 injuries (4 cases) and pilon fractures (2 cases). Five patients (25%) had open fractures, and 12 patients (60%) underwent surgical treatment. Conclusions: The ankle and foot are the most common injury sites in e-scooter-related accidents. Given the high frequency and severity of e-scooter-related ankle and foot injuries, we suggest that more attention be paid to preventing these types of injuries with greater public awareness of the dangers of using e-scooters.

BACKGROUND: Detergent poisoning mostly occurs through oral ingestion (> 85%), ocular exposure (< 15%), or dermal exposure (< 8%). Reports of detergent poisoning through an intravenous injection are extremely rare. In addition, there are very few cases of renal toxicity directly caused by detergents. Here, we report a unique case of acute kidney injury caused by detergent poisoning through an accidental intravenous injection. CASE SUMMARY: A 61-year-old man was intravenously injected with 20 mL of detergent by another patient in the same room of a local hospital. The surfactant and calcium carbonate accounted for the largest proportion of the detergent. The patient complained of vascular pain, chest discomfort, and nausea, and was transferred to our institution. After hospitalization, the patient's serum creatinine level increased to 5.42 mg/dL, and his daily urine output decreased to approximately 300 mL. Renal biopsy findings noted that the glomeruli were relatively intact; however, diffuse acute tubular injury was observed. Generalized edema was also noted, and the patient underwent a total of four hemodiafiltration sessions. Afterward, the patient's urine output gradually increased whereas the serum creatinine level decreased. The patient was discharged in a stable status without any sequelae. CONCLUSION: Detergents appear to directly cause renal tubular injury by systemic absorption. In treating a patient with detergent poisoning, physicians should be aware that the renal function may also deteriorate. In addition, timely renal replacement therapy may help improve the patient's prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Globally there has been an exponential increase in the penetration of smartphones among the youth population and smartphones have become indispensable in the daily lives of university students in South Korea. Several studies have associated the problematic use of smartphones or addiction with different adverse outcomes. The goal of this study was to collate empirical evidence and provides an overall synthesis of the literature about the adverse effects of smartphone addiction on university students in South Korea. METHOD: We carried out a systematic review of the published literature between August and October 2022 on the adverse effects of smartphone addiction on university students in South Korea, published between 2012 and 2022 in Pubmed/Medline, PsycInfo, Embase, Biomed-Central, Web of Science, Directory of Open Access Journals, Elsevier's collection, Wiley Online Library, SpringerLink, Sage Journal's collection and Cochrane Library. RESULTS: Thirty-four articles published between 2012 and 2022 were included in the synthesis of this review. Eight studies explored the association between smartphone addiction and the psychological and mental health of university students in Korea. Smartphone addiction was associated with physical health leading to sleep disorders and musculoskeletal and neurological problems. Academic performance, procrastination, impulsivity, self-esteem, reduced social interaction, solitude, and suicide were also negatively associated with smartphone addiction. CONCLUSIONS: Our study adds to the literature regarding the adverse effects of smartphone addiction on university students in Korea and provides more information for addiction prevention and health promotion activities.
